Investment Review day 35 of 50: Alphabet $GOOG $GOOGL

Is Google doomed?

I suspect the reports of its death are greatly exaggerated! Alphabet isn’t just the dominant player in search, it also has nine products with more than a billion users. The company invented the basis for modern AI (Transformers) and has some of the smartest AI engineers on the planet.

What’s Alphabet’s key advantage? Mobile search is where it’s dominant – Android makes up the majority of smartphones worldwide, making Google the uncontested mobile leader. But not just that, Google is also the default search engine in Safari on iOS $AAPL, plus Chrome. Users typically don’t change their behavior unless an alternative offers a meaningfully superior proposition, so unless regulators force a break-up, Google retains an indomitable home-field advantage. And that’s an advantage that will compound as Generative AI Advertising begins to deliver better quality results for both end users and advertisers.

I first bought stock in 2010, adding in 2013, 2014, and 2020, and consolidating into $GOOGL when the company transitioned to Alphabet. I consider this a core holding, and it’s one that I’ve been very happy to dollar-cost average into over the very long term.

When you really get down to it, being an investor can often actually be very straightforward. Buy the greatest companies in the world, and hold them for a long time. That’s exactly what I’m doing with Alphabet.

I’m putting my holdings under the microscope. Over the next 50 days I’ll break down my whole investment portfolio. Wins, losses, and the ‘why’ behind it all. And on day 50 I’m going to share my full portfolio so you can see how my strategies played out in the real world over the last twenty years and what we can all learn together.
