About Us

The Telescope website and companion podcast are used by the hosts Luke and Albert to share the lessons they’ve learned over a combined forty years of investing. Regular articles and weekly podcast episodes discuss investing strategy, investment opportunities, advice for new and seasoned investors, and thoughts on developing a wealth mindset and building financial independence.

Any approach to investing must be tailored to the individual and take into account their financial situation, time to retirement, and appetite for risk. In general, the Telescope investing strategy is not for the risk-averse; the companies we invest in tend to be volatile and not all of them succeed. Over the short-term, it can be a bumpy ride. However, in the long-term, we’ve enjoyed market beating returns, and hope that our subscribers do too.

About Luke

Investing has been a hobby from a fairly young age, and I was always fascinated by the concept of compound interest – recognising intuitively that at that point of my life, time was my greatest asset.

I didn’t have a great deal of money to invest in those early years, but being a believer in the adage that you should invest in what you know, once I’d built a modest asset base using index trackers, around 2004 I switched into individual equities.

I’ve always had an optimistic view of the future, and I’ve primarily found myself drawn to the technology sector. Perhaps partly acknowledging a growing awareness of my own mortality, I’ve also gradually branched this out into healthcare, biomedicine and biotech, but also because this feels like a growing sector, as we all increasingly expect to live longer healthier lives. My portfolio also has a modest mix of lifestyle and retail brands, as I strive to maintain some semblance of balance overall.

It’s fair to say that investing has formed a bigger part of my life in the last few years, and 2020 gave me the opportunity to take a career break and to focus on developing some of the thinking and lessons that Albert and I have picked-up on our own investing journeys.

The result of this is the Telescope website and companion podcast, where we plan to share some of our experiences and lessons learned, and hopefully to connect with a wider community of investors who have different perspectives and viewpoints to share.

About Albert

It was several years later when I connected with a few like-minded friends and started sharing investment advice and information sources. I began to read more and trade less, and my approach to investing fundamentally changed. My rationale for investing in a particular company became more rigorous, and I invested for the long-term, selling stocks less frequently. The performance of my portfolio improved dramatically as a result.

I started investing shortly after graduating from University. In the early years, I had no one to guide me, and in hindsight it’s clear that I made many investing mistakes – as they say in the game of poker, you have to pay for your education.

As time went on, Luke and I started developing our own ideas on how to invest based on our knowledge, experience, and forecasts for the future. These ideas form the basis for Telescope Investing. The world is always changing, and our ideas are constantly evolving as we continue to learn. We have invested through three financial crises: the dot-com bubble of the early 2000s, the financial crisis of 2008 and the coronavirus pandemic of 2020. Each one, from an investing point of view, has been progressively easier to handle.

Nowadays, there is a wealth of information available to help investors along the right path, it’s my hope that the Telescope website and podcast will form an important part of this knowledge base for a new investor.
